Top 5 Pre- and Post-Workout Nutrition Tips

By FitnessPlex | In Health | on November 4, 2025

When you are living your best, most healthy life you’re most likely reaching out for fitness goals, and developing healthy physical activity routines. What many people forget is that an important part of the equation is eating properly along the way. What you eat before and after a workout can have a significant impact on your performance, recovery, and success at meeting your fitness goals. Whether you are hitting the gym hard, engaging in a sport consistently, or hiking or walking, proper nutrition can make a big difference.

Tips for Healthy Workout Meals

Fitness Plex is here to share some of the best nutrition tips for exercise that will help fuel your body properly and help it recover pre- and post-workout. Eating right will help you perform at a high level and successfully meet your fitness goals.

Balance, carbs, and protein before workouts.

It’s important to provide your body with the right energy sources before a workout. Carbohydrates provide a quick energy boost needed to power through exercise while protein provides a long lasting muscle building nutrition. A good pre-workout snack will balance both carbohydrates and protein. For instance, you may enjoy Greek yogurt with fruit, whole wheat toast with a healthy lunch meat, banana and almond butter, and other combined sources of carbohydrates and proteins make for a great pre-workout snack.

Hydrate.

Before, during, and after workouts, hydration is a must. Dehydration can harm your body as it tries to perform and recover from a good workout. It’s important to provide your body with water throughout your day, not just surrounding your workout.

Eat within 60 minutes after exercise.

Your muscles receive nutrients the most within a 30 to 60 minute window after activity. Therefore it’s important to have a post workout meal or snack to provide your body the nutrients it requires.

Healthy food, again with a combination of protein and carbohydrates, will be the best fuel for your body. You could enjoy a protein shake, pair fresh fruit with grilled chicken, cottage cheese with berries or tomatoes and cucumber – any healthy snack that provides nutrients to your body is a great after workout meal.

Enjoy healthy fats at the right time

Healthy fats are important elements of your diet. However, these fats slow digestion, so you do not want to eat them too close to a workout. Before and after a workout, your body needs to be able to absorb the energy and nutrients it is provided, so the timing of when you incorporate these fats needs to be taken into consideration.

Trust your body.

It’s important to listen to your body’s needs. You will quickly find what works effectively for your particular system. When you attempt to implement a nutritional plan for your active lifestyle, working with a nutritionist is a quick way to determine what will likely work best for your body. It’s also important to adjust as necessary, based on your body’s response.
